IBIT Review (2026): BlackRock’s Bitcoin ETF, the Category King

BY THE BITCOIN ALMANACK TEAM·UPDATED JUL 2026·10 MIN READ·● BTC {{ price }}·CONTAINS AFFILIATE LINKS
OUR VERDICT THE DEFAULT CHOICE 9.2/10
IBIT is the biggest, most liquid bitcoin ETF in the world — past $100B in assets, penny-wide spreads, and options markets deeper than some stocks. At 0.25% it is not the absolute cheapest, but liquidity this deep usually saves more than five basis points of fee. If you are buying bitcoin exposure in a brokerage account, this is the default for a reason.
WHAT WE LIKED
+Deepest liquidity and tightest spreads of any bitcoin ETF
+Fastest-growing ETF in history — scale brings stability
+Options chain enables income and hedging strategies
+BlackRock operational infrastructure
WHAT WE DIDN'T
0.25% — a hair above the cheapest rivals
Coinbase custody concentration (shared with most peers)
You own a fund share, not withdrawable bitcoin

Why size matters in an ETF

Spreads and tracking. IBIT trades so heavily that the gap between buy and sell price is pennies, and its market makers keep it glued to net asset value. On a $10,000 position, tight execution routinely beats a 0.04% fee advantage held for a year.

The fee math

0.25% means $25 a year per $10,000. BITB charges 0.20% and ARKB 0.21% — real but tiny differences that only dominate for very large, very long-held positions.

What you give up vs. real bitcoin

An ETF share cannot be withdrawn, spent, or self-custodied, and it trades only during market hours. It exists for accounts where real bitcoin cannot go — IRAs, 401(k) brokerage windows, trusts. For money outside those wrappers, compare buying actual bitcoin first.
Buy it if…
You want bitcoin exposure in a brokerage or retirement account with the least friction and best execution.
Skip it if…
You can hold real bitcoin instead — self-custody costs 0% a year.

Common questions

Does IBIT hold real bitcoin?

Yes — spot bitcoin held with Coinbase Custody, audited and published daily. Shares track that bitcoin minus the fee.

IBIT or FBTC?

Functionally interchangeable. Pick IBIT for liquidity/options, FBTC if you prefer Fidelity self-custodying its own coins. Fee is identical.

Can I convert IBIT shares to bitcoin?

No — retail investors can only sell for cash. If withdrawable bitcoin matters, buy on an exchange and self-custody.
