FBTC Review (2026): The One Where the Issuer Holds Its Own Keys

BY THE BITCOIN ALMANACK TEAM·UPDATED JUL 2026·9 MIN READ·● BTC {{ price }}·CONTAINS AFFILIATE LINKS
OUR VERDICT SELF-CUSTODIED COINS 9.0/10
FBTC matches IBIT on fee (0.25%) and pedigree, with one structural difference that matters: Fidelity custodies the bitcoin itself through Fidelity Digital Assets rather than outsourcing to Coinbase. That diversifies the industry’s biggest concentration risk. Liquidity is excellent, just a tier below IBIT.
WHAT WE LIKED
+Fidelity custodies its own bitcoin — no Coinbase dependency
+Same 0.25% fee as IBIT
+Seamless inside Fidelity accounts (and its Crypto IRA)
+Decades of custody and fund-ops track record
WHAT WE DIDN'T
Liquidity and options depth trail IBIT
Custody is in-house — you trust one firm end to end
Still a fund share, not withdrawable bitcoin

The custody argument

Most US bitcoin ETFs park their coins at Coinbase Custody — a single point of failure for the whole category. Fidelity is the major exception, holding FBTC’s bitcoin in its own cold storage. If you already own IBIT elsewhere, splitting custody risk across issuers is a legitimate reason FBTC exists in the same portfolio.

Inside the Fidelity ecosystem

For the tens of millions with Fidelity 401(k)s, IRAs, and brokerages, FBTC is one ticket away with no new accounts. Fidelity also offers a dedicated Crypto IRA if you want actual coins in retirement wrappers instead.

Execution quality

Spreads run a touch wider than IBIT’s but remain tight by any normal standard. For buy-and-hold investors the difference is noise.
Buy it if…
You are a Fidelity client, or you want issuer-custody diversification away from Coinbase.
Skip it if…
You trade options or size in and out often — IBIT’s depth wins.

Common questions

Who actually holds FBTC’s bitcoin?

Fidelity Digital Assets, the firm’s own institutional custody arm, operating cold storage since 2018.

Is 0.25% expensive?

Mid-pack. BITB (0.20%) and ARKB (0.21%) are cheaper; the difference is $4–5 a year per $10,000.

FBTC in an IRA?

Yes — any brokerage IRA can hold it. That tax wrapper is the main reason ETFs beat spot bitcoin for retirement money.
