Trezor Safe 5 Review (2026): Open Source Meets Actual Usability

BY THE BITCOIN ALMANACK TEAM·UPDATED JUL 2026·10 MIN READ·● BTC {{ price }}·CONTAINS AFFILIATE LINKS
OUR VERDICT BEST ALL-AROUND COLD 9.0/10
The Safe 5 is the cold wallet we recommend to most people: color touchscreen, haptics, an EAL6+ secure element, and fully open-source firmware — the transparency Ledger does not offer. Setup to first receive took us 12 minutes. A Bitcoin-only firmware option keeps the maximalists happy too.
WHAT WE LIKED
+Fully open-source firmware — independently auditable
+Color touchscreen makes verification genuinely easy
+Secure element + Shamir backup support
+Bitcoin-only firmware option available
WHAT WE DIDN'T
Requires a live USB connection to sign (no air gap)
Trezor Suite pushes trading integrations
Pricier than the equally capable Safe 3

The transparency argument

Every line of Trezor firmware is public and community-audited — you do not have to trust the vendor about what runs on the device. In a category where the entire point is removing trust, that is more than a philosophical nicety.

Usability that earns its keep

The touchscreen turns address verification — the step everyone skips on tiny two-button devices — into something you will actually do. Setup is guided, recovery is rehearsable, and Shamir backup lets you split your seed into shares.

Where it sits

Less hardened than a Coldcard (no air gap), more transparent than a Ledger. For a first hardware wallet holding four or five figures, that middle is exactly right.
Buy it if…
You want strong security you will actually use correctly, with nothing closed-source in the loop.
Skip it if…
You need air-gapped signing for a large stack — that is Coldcard territory.

Common questions

Safe 5 or Safe 3?

Same secure element and firmware; the Safe 3 ($79) uses buttons instead of a touchscreen. If budget matters, the Safe 3 is the best value in hardware wallets.

Was Trezor ever hacked?

Physical-extraction attacks existed against older models without secure elements. The Safe series EAL6+ chip addresses that. Use a passphrase for defense in depth.

Does it work with Sparrow and Electrum?

Yes — Trezor devices work with all the major Bitcoin-native desktop wallets, not just Trezor Suite.
