Lightning quietly compounds: capacity holds near record as payments shift off-chain

While price chops, bitcoin's payment layer keeps growing where it counts — larger channels, steadier routing, and exchange integrations that move real volume off the base chain.

Bitcoin's Lightning Network is having its least dramatic — and arguably most important — year. Public channel capacity has held in the 5,000–5,500 BTC band through 2026's price chop, near the record zone it first reached last year. But the headline number increasingly misses the story: the network's growth has moved into places the public graph can't see.
The structural shift shows in the channels themselves. Public channel count has drifted down for two years while average channel size keeps rising — fewer hobbyist channels, more well-capitalized routing infrastructure. Node operators describe the same maturation: payment failure rates that made Lightning frustrating in 2022–23 have fallen as routing algorithms improved and liquidity concentrated on professional nodes.
Meanwhile the volume that matters has gone private and custodial. Major exchanges — Coinbase, Kraken, Binance and OKX among them — now support Lightning deposits and withdrawals, letting users skip on-chain fees and confirmation waits entirely. Payment processors report steady growth in point-of-sale and cross-border flows, and stablecoin transfers over Lightning (via Taproot Assets) opened a second lane for the network in remittance corridors where dollars, not bitcoin, are the product people want.
None of this shows up neatly in public statistics — private channels and custodial internal transfers are invisible by design, which is why analysts treat published capacity as a floor. The honest read: Lightning's speculative era, when channel capacity was a bull-market vanity metric, is over. What's left is quieter — infrastructure that increasingly just works, growing roughly in line with actual payment demand rather than hype.
The open questions are real, too. Routing revenue remains thin for most node operators; liquidity concentration on a handful of large hubs cuts against the decentralization ideal; and self-custodial Lightning is still harder than it should be, which is why most new users touch Lightning through custodians first. The technology has won its argument as bitcoin's payments lane — how decentralized that lane stays is 2026's live debate.

What is the Lightning Network?
