The seven-day streak is over: bitcoin ETFs bleed $225M and the July rally stalls at $64K

A week of inflows ended as Iran tensions and rising Treasury yields pulled $225 million out of the spot funds. Bitcoin backed off its 30-day high above $65K — and the CLARITY trade isn't helping.

Seven days of creations, then one redemption print that undid a third of them.
The best flow story of the summer just lost its ending. US spot bitcoin ETFs shed roughly $225 million on Friday, snapping a seven-day inflow streak — the longest positive run since spring — as renewed Iran tensions sent allocators back to the sidelines. Bitcoin followed the money out: after touching a 30-day high above $65,000 earlier in the week, it slipped about 1.4% to trade near $64,000 on Saturday morning. The week still closes green, barely, and July's 11% climb is intact. But the tape's one reliable bullish signal just blinked off.
The proximate causes are the usual suspects wearing new dates. Treasury yields rose Friday and dragged the whole risk complex lower — bitcoin opened 1.6% below Thursday, ether nearly 3% — the same rate-sensitivity that failed the safe-haven test four times this month. Layer on tanker attacks keeping the war premium alive and you get the now-familiar sequence: geopolitics lifts oil, oil lifts inflation expectations, inflation expectations lift yields, and yields sink bitcoin.
Washington subtracted the rest. Odds that the CLARITY Act passes this session fell again this week, and Thursday's slide was pinned squarely on the fading legislative trade. The 616-page text is out, the Senate clock is running toward the August recess, and prediction markets are pricing "not this year." For institutions that bought the regulatory-tailwind story in early July, that's a reason to lighten up.
Why one day of redemptions matters: ETF flows are the cleanest public read on institutional demand, and they've been the month's swing variable. July opened strong — a $221.7 million inflow day on July 2, then $510 million across three consecutive sessions — the first sustained buying since the funds ended an 8-week outflow streak. But the 30-day trend is still net negative. The seven-day run was the bulls' best evidence the trend had turned. One $225 million print doesn't refute that; a second one would.
The bulls have one loud voice left. Coinbase's Brian Armstrong argued this week that bitcoin may have already put in its bottom, and the structure half-supports him: bitcoin is up 11% in July, holding above the $57,750 low, and dominance keeps grinding higher. The bears have the calendar — analysts warn August and September have historically erased summer gains. Monday's flow report is the tiebreaker. If creations resume, Friday was noise. If redemptions run, the $64,000 range floor comes back into play, and the July rally starts looking like a fakeout with good PR.

WHY IT MATTERS
Since the spot funds launched, ETF flows have been bitcoin's marginal buyer — and its marginal seller. A seven-day inflow streak was the strongest institutional-demand signal of the summer and the backbone of July's recovery narrative. Whether Friday's $225M outflow is a blip or a turn decides if the rally has legs into August, historically bitcoin's cruelest month.

What to watch next

1.Monday's flow report. One outflow day is weather; two is climate. Resumed creations would make Friday a footnote.
2.The 10-year yield. Friday's slide was a rates story wearing a crypto costume. If yields keep climbing, the $64K floor gets tested regardless of flows.
3.A CLARITY floor vote. The Senate has until the August recess. Any scheduling news moves the Polymarket odds — and lately, the odds move bitcoin.

Frequently asked questions

Why did the seven-day inflow streak matter?

ETF flows are the cleanest public read on institutional demand. Seven straight days of creations underpinned July's 11% rally — which is why a single $225M outflow day reads as a sentiment break, not a rounding error.

What snapped the streak?

A stack of macro irritants at once: renewed Iran tensions, higher Treasury yields pulling all risk assets lower, and fading odds that the CLARITY Act passes this session. None alone was decisive; together they flipped the marginal allocator to sell.

Are ETF flows still negative for July overall?

Roughly balanced: early-July inflows (including a $510M three-session run) offset June's bleed, but the 30-day trend remains net outflows. The streak was the bulls' best evidence of a turn — which it may still be, if Monday resumes inflows.
