Bitcoin is about to turn one million blocks old. Here's what that actually means

The chain crossed block 959,697 this weekend — 96% of the way to block 1,000,000, due around spring 2027. A million ten-minute heartbeats without missing one is the whole story.

Each square is 1,000 blocks. The empty ones get filled at a rate of one every ten minutes, like clockwork, because it literally is the clock.
Sometime this weekend, while nobody was watching, bitcoin's block counter ticked past 959,697. That number is the chain's odometer: every block ever mined since the first one on January 3, 2009, counted in order, no gaps, no do-overs. And it means the network is now 96% of the way to a number that has never existed in its history: block one million, due to arrive around spring 2027.
Here's the fun way to think about it. Bitcoin doesn't measure time in years — it measures time in blocks. Every ten minutes or so, somewhere on Earth, a machine wins a race of pure proof of work and stamps the next page into the ledger. About 144 pages a day, every day, for seventeen and a half years. Through the Cyprus banking crisis, the Mt. Gox collapse, the China mining ban, three global market crashes, two wars, and roughly four hundred published obituaries — the counter never stopped. Not once. The network's uptime since 2013 is a flat 100%; since 2009 it rounds to 99.99%.
That's the real answer to the "isn't this a scam?" question that block one million quietly settles. Ponzi schemes have operators, and operators eventually stop answering the phone. Bitcoin's counter is incremented by tens of thousands of independent nodes and miners who mostly hate each other's politics and still agree, ten minutes at a time, on exactly one thing: what block comes next. A million consecutive agreements between strangers is not a business model. It's a public utility with a heartbeat.
The million mark changes nothing technically — the block reward stays at 3.125 BTC until the next halving at block 1,050,000, around 2028 — but it's a milestone in the units that actually matter to the protocol. Bitcoin's entire monetary policy is written in block heights, not dates: halvings every 210,000 blocks, difficulty resets every 2,016, the final satoshi mined somewhere near block 6,930,000 in the 2140s. By height 959,697 the network has already issued about 19.91 million of the 21 million coins that will ever exist — 94.8% of the total supply, out in the world, with a century of mining left for the last sliver.
So when the counter rolls over to seven digits next spring, nothing will happen. No fork, no event, no ceremony. A miner somewhere will win block 1,000,000 the same way one won block 999,999 ten minutes earlier, and the network will move on without looking up. Which is, if you think about it, the most bullish possible way for a monetary system to celebrate a milestone: by not noticing.

WHY IT MATTERS
Every bitcoin debate — price, policy, adoption — eventually rests on one question: does the thing keep working? Block height is the network's own answer, updated every ten minutes, auditable by anyone with a laptop. One million blocks is 17+ years of uninterrupted consensus among parties who never met and never had to trust each other. Nothing else in finance has a counter like it.

What to watch next

1.The block 1,000,000 sweepstakes. Which mining pool wins the millionth block is pure lottery — but expect the winner to frame it. Watch for coinbase-message easter eggs, the modern version of the genesis block's newspaper headline.
2.Hashrate through the milestone. The race speeds up when more machines join: current hashrate trends could pull the ETA into April — or push it toward summer.
3.Block 1,050,000. The one that actually changes something: the fifth halving, cutting the reward to 1.5625 BTC, roughly a year after the million mark.
