Alto CryptoIRA Review (2026): The Coinbase-Powered Wildcard

BY THE BITCOIN ALMANACK TEAM·UPDATED JUL 2026·8 MIN READ·● BTC {{ price }}·CONTAINS AFFILIATE LINKS
OUR VERDICT WIDEST SELECTION 8.1/10
Alto pipes a Coinbase integration into an IRA wrapper: 200+ tradable assets, a $10 minimum, and a flat 1% trade fee with no account fees. It is the cheapest door into a crypto IRA and the widest selection anywhere. The app is rough, SIMPLE IRAs are missing, and 200 coins is 199 more than a retirement account needs.
WHAT WE LIKED
+$10 minimum — lowest barrier in the category
+1% trades, no account fees
+200+ assets via Coinbase integration
+Also does alternative assets (real estate, startups) in separate IRAs
WHAT WE DIDN'T
Mobile app reviews are poor
No SIMPLE IRA support
Massive altcoin menu is a bug for retirement money, not a feature

The low-barrier pitch

Ten dollars opens an account. For someone who wants to start a Roth with pocket change and build the habit, nothing else in the category comes close — iTrustCapital wants $1,000, Unchained wants $2,000 a trade.

Coinbase under the hood

Trading and custody run through the Coinbase integration, which means institutional-grade infrastructure and the same custody concentration caveat as half this industry. Execution was fine in our tests; the mobile experience was not — use the web app.

Our bitcoin-first caveat

Alto’s 200-asset menu is its marketing and its danger. Retirement accounts reward boring; if the selection tempts you to trade, the wrapper’s tax advantage won’t save the portfolio. Buy bitcoin, close the tab.
Use it if…
You’re starting small, want the lowest entry point, or need the odd non-BTC asset in an IRA.
Skip it if…
You want polish and support (iTrustCapital/Fidelity) or keys (Unchained).

Common questions

Is Alto the same as Coinbase?

No — Alto is the IRA platform; Coinbase provides the trading/custody rails through an integration.

What is the Alto alternative-asset IRA?

A separate self-directed product for private equity, real estate, and startups — unrelated to the CryptoIRA but useful if you want everything under one roof.

Why not just pick by coin count?

Because retirement money is where discipline matters most. Selection breadth is only valuable if you’ll use it wisely — most shouldn’t.
