Hashrate

MINING
DEFINITION
The total computing power securing the Bitcoin network, measured in hashes (guesses) per second — currently around a zettahash: 10²¹ guesses every second.
Each hash is one attempt at the proof-of-work puzzle. More hashrate means an attacker needs more hardware and electricity to threaten the chain, so hashrate is the most direct gauge of network security.
For individual machines the same unit applies at smaller scale: a flagship ASIC produces ~200–270 TH/s. Machine hashrate divided by network hashrate is your share of the lottery.

Common questions

Why does rising hashrate matter?

It means miners are investing in securing the network — attacks get more expensive and the system more robust.

Does more hashrate create more bitcoin?

No — the difficulty adjustment cancels it out. Issuance stays on schedule regardless.
