EXCHANGES/GEMINI

Gemini review: the compliance-first exchange, tested for a month

We bought, withdrew, and filed support tickets for 30 days. Gemini is the exchange for people who rank "regulated and boring" above "cheap" — and after the fee math below, you should know exactly what that costs you.

OUR VERDICT 8.3/10
Gemini is the exchange we'd point a cautious relative to: a New York trust company, clean security record since 2014, SOC 2 audits, and the best customer support response times we measured. The trade-off is cost — the default buy screen is expensive, and even ActiveTrader (its cheap mode) runs slightly above Coinbase Advanced. Buy on ActiveTrader from day one and the premium shrinks to pennies.

What a $500 buy really costs

Gemini has the same two-tier structure as Coinbase: an expensive convenience screen and a cheap trading screen, same account, same coins. The entire review in one table:
METHODFEEON $500
Simple buy, debit card3.49% + spread~$20.50
Simple buy, ACH1.49% + spread~$10.20
ActiveTrader, market order0.40% taker$2.00
ActiveTrader, limit order0.20% maker$1.00
Fee schedule verified JUL 2026 — confirm current rates before trading. Our measured spread on simple buys averaged ~0.55%.

The withdrawal test

The test that matters most for self-custody: we withdrew BTC to a hardware wallet three times. Every withdrawal processed within 25 minutes, address allowlisting worked cleanly, and Gemini batches transactions so our network fee was consistently below the solo-send rate. Ten free withdrawals per month on the standard account — better than Coinbase's fee-passthrough.

Support: an actual human, twice

We filed two tickets — one routine (statement question), one urgent-flagged (login issue). First responses arrived in 4 hours and 41 minutes respectively, both from humans who read the question. That urgent response time was the best of the four exchanges we tested, and it's a real differentiator when something's wrong with your money.

Security posture: the reason Gemini exists

A NYDFS-regulated trust company, majority of assets in cold storage, hardware-key (WebAuthn) 2FA support, and no exchange-breach loss of customer crypto since founding. The Earn-program bankruptcy of 2022–23 is the asterisk — funds lent to a third party got frozen, a reminder that any yield product is a loan. Gemini made Earn users whole in 2024, and no longer offers the product in that form.
USE IT IF
+Regulation and security record are your top criteria
+You withdraw to self-custody regularly (10 free/month)
+You want support that answers when it's urgent
SKIP IT IF
Lowest fees decide it → Coinbase Advanced edges it out
You'll only ever use a simple buy screen → Cash App is cheaper for that
You want yield products — treat any crypto yield as a loan, anywhere

Common questions

Is Gemini safe after the Earn collapse?
The exchange and custody business never lost customer crypto — Earn was a separate lending program whose partner (Genesis) froze. Users were made whole in 2024. The durable lesson: exchange custody and lending programs are different risks; don't lend what you can't lose.
Gemini vs Coinbase — the short answer?
Coinbase Advanced is slightly cheaper; Gemini answered support faster and gives free withdrawals. Full head-to-head: Coinbase vs Gemini →
What is ActiveTrader and does it cost extra?
It's a free interface toggle in your same account — an order-book trading screen with 0.20–0.40% fees instead of ~1.5–4%. Turn it on day one; there's no downside for a simple market buy.
Is my bitcoin insured on Gemini?
Gemini carries insurance on hot-wallet assets and USD balances get FDIC passthrough (as cash at partner banks) — but no insurance covers a compromise of your login. Hardware-key 2FA and eventual self-custody are your real protection.
