BTCC Review (2026): The World’s First Bitcoin ETF, Still Canada’s Default

BY THE BITCOIN ALMANACK TEAM·UPDATED JUL 2026·9 MIN READ·● BTC {{ price }}·CONTAINS AFFILIATE LINKS
OUR VERDICT CANADA’S FIRST 8.0/10
BTCC launched in February 2021 — the first spot bitcoin ETF anywhere — and remains the standard choice for Canadian TFSAs and RRSPs. Cold-stored, audited, available in CAD and USD units. The catch is cost: a ~1% management fee (~1.5% all-in MER) that US funds embarrass. Inside a Canadian tax shelter it still earns its keep.

Why Canadians still buy it

TFSA and RRSP eligibility. Bitcoin’s gains are fully sheltered inside those wrappers, and no exchange account offers that. Against a ~1.5% MER, the tax math still wins decisively for most Canadian savers.

The fee problem

US investors pay 0.20–0.25% for the same exposure; Canadians pay ~1.5% here. Cheaper Canadian alternatives (e.g. Fidelity’s FBTC.CA at ~0.44%) have emerged — compare before defaulting to BTCC, especially for large balances.

Unit classes explained

BTCC trades in CAD, BTCC.U in USD, BTCC.B unhedged CAD. Most long-term holders should prefer unhedged — currency hedging costs drag and bitcoin’s volatility dwarfs CAD/USD moves anyway.
Buy it if…
You are Canadian and filling a TFSA or RRSP with bitcoin exposure.
Skip it if…
You are outside Canada, or fee-sensitive enough to shop the newer low-fee Canadian funds.

Common questions

Why is it so much more expensive than US ETFs?

Smaller market, earlier launch, less fee competition. Canadian issuers have been slow to cut; pressure from newer entrants is finally building.

Is BTCC safe?

The bitcoin sits in institutional cold storage with published audits. Standard fund risks apply; custody has been clean since 2021.

Can Americans buy BTCC?

Technically possible via TSX access, pointless in practice — US funds are cheaper and more liquid.
